Roblox sued a group of anonymous hackers to unmask their identifies.
Last week they dismissed the lawsuit. Why? The hunt is over.
Back in June 2024, Roblox filed a lawsuit in San Mateo Superior Court (that's in the Bay Area--where Roblox HQ is) against a group of unknown individuals it claimed were running third-party websites selling black market Roblox virtual items and Robux.
Last week, Roblox asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit. But they did so without prejudice, meaning they can re-file it anytime.
So why would Roblox dismiss a lawsuit they initiated?
It’s likely Roblox succeeded in unmasking the individuals behind these operations. They might now be negotiating private resolutions directly with these bad actors, avoiding the need for litigation. Another possibility is jurisdictional. Now that Roblox knows who these individuals are and where they live, they may need to re-file the lawsuit in a different court to pursue further action.
I’ll be keeping an eye on any new filings. Stay tuned.
