Is Robux about to be regulated?
A US government agency announced that it wants to regulate Robux.
Does this mean you’ll have to pay tax on your Robux?
Probably not.
So what does it mean?
A government agency wants to expand the Electronic Fund Transfer Act to cover digital currencies, like Robux.
The purpose of this law is to protect you from bank fraud, like if someone steals your credit card, you’re not stuck with the bill.
So, what would it look like if Robux is covered by this law?
Let’s say Roblox terminates your account and you lose your Robux.
Roblox may be required to restore your Robux.
Maybe your account is hacked. Roblox maybe required to restore your Robux.
Maybe you buy a UGC item that is later DMCA’d, so you lose the ability to use it. Roblox may be required to restore your Robux.
So this law could be good for gamers, but a huge burden for Roblox.
Ultimately, I think it is very unlikely the law is expanded any time soon, because the incoming president and administration does not support expanded regulations like this.
